Via Appia Antica - along the Appian Way in Rome

Here's a very nice article in the New York Times about the Appian Way. This would make, as they point out, a great Sunday outing in Rome. Something I have been wanting to do for a long time myself.

Parmesan and Endangered Species

Here is a really interesting article about how the pastures where the cows that produce the milk made into parmesan seem to be providing a home for endangered species of birds.

Parmesan good for endangered birdsBy Web Editor. Filed under News from Italy, General, Food & Drinkon February 18th, 2007By remaining faithful to centuries-old traditions of production, Parmesan cheese is giving endangered birds a new lease on life, according to a study by an Italian environmental group.LIPU, the Italian Bird Protection League, surveyed the northern Italian regions where Parmesan is the main type of cheese produced, and found that there are more rare species like lapwings and duck-hawks near cow pastures than in neighbouring corn or tomato fields.

eGullet thread you have to read

eGullet is a website for very serious foodies. There are a lot of forums and naturally one of those is devoted to Italy and Italian Cuisine. The link for that forum is here. For the last couple of years they have been taking one month and cooking dishes related to the various regions of Italy - it is quite interesting and these people are serious about their food and take great photos too.

It seems that on eGullet they also take turns with different people blogging for a week about what they are cooking and eating that week. Right now someone who lives in Umbria is doing the blog. It is a fantastic thread with photos and commentary that make you want to make your reservations for a trip there immediately.

Check it out here.

Italian Villas and Gardens - great resource

As a garden lover, what could be better than visiting some of the wonderful villas and gardens of Italy. If such a thing is at all interesting, here is a site with lots of great inspiration for viewing gardens and villas. Includes opening times, fees and all other pertinent details.

On my last trip I got to visit Villa Carlotta on Lake Como. More on that in another post.
